When Jennifer Convey talks about her new role as principal of Howe Elementary School, one word comes up again and again: relationships.
After serving as principal at Oak Crest Elementary for the past six years, Convey is excited to begin a new chapter at Howe, bringing with her a passion for supporting students, partnering with families, and fostering a school culture where everyone feels welcome.
"For me personally, it's a new challenge," Convey said. "When you've been in a role for several years, you're ready for a new endeavor. I'm excited to build relationships with our students, families, and staff and continue supporting student learning."
Although she's new to Howe, Convey is no stranger to Beach Park School District 3. Her background in special education and experience leading Oak Crest have given her a deep understanding of the district and its commitment to helping every student succeed. Now, she's eager to build on Howe's strengths while getting to know its unique school community.
One area she's especially excited about is Howe's dual language program.
Having previously worked in a dual-language school, Convey believes that bilingual education opens doors for students long after they leave elementary school.
"I really believe in dual language education," she said. "It's best practice, and I think it creates opportunities for children as they grow into adults."
As the district's first cohort of dual language students begins middle school this year, Convey looks forward to helping the next generation of learners continue that journey.
While academic growth remains a priority, Convey says creating a welcoming school culture will be at the heart of her work this year.
She hopes families see Howe as a place where communication is open, partnerships are valued, and every child is cared for.
"I want families to know they can trust me," she said. "I want them to feel comfortable sharing their thoughts and concerns. This is their school, and I want them to always feel welcome here."
That philosophy extends to students as well.
"You're going to see me outside every morning saying hello to students," she said. "I'm going to be in classrooms, in the cafeteria, learning alongside our students. I don't speak Spanish, so I'm hoping our kindergarteners and first graders might teach me a thing or two."
Those everyday interactions, she says, are what help build trust and create a positive learning environment.
This year, Howe will also continue implementing its English language arts curriculum while supporting teachers as they deepen their understanding of the program during its second year of implementation. Convey sees her role as one of collaboration, working alongside teachers as they continue to refine instruction and support student growth.
As families prepare for the first day of school, Convey hopes they know one thing above all else: Howe is a place where students will be welcomed, supported, and encouraged to grow.
"I'm looking forward to building relationships with everyone, our students, staff, and families," she said. "Together, we'll continue building a warm, welcoming, and safe school community where every child has the opportunity to thrive."
