Beach Park Middle School Athletics

Handbook

Policies

Participation in interscholastic sports at Beach Park Middle School is a privilege that has to be earned and maintained by our student athletes. Academics and citizenship in school is of the utmost importance, and this is reflected in our Athletic Eligibility Policy. Additionally, sportsmanship continues to be a major focus in the athletic arena. Student athletes and parents represent our school at all home and away matches, and we believe that it is important to model appropriate sportsmanship at all times.

Eligibility Policy

All students participating in interscholastic sports must meet weekly eligibility requirements.

A student will be declared ineligible if they have:

  • 2 or more Ds in academic classes.

  • 1 or more Fs in academic classes.

  • Receives an unsatisfactory behavior report from a teacher(s).

  • Receives an OSS (Out of School Suspension)

If a student is declared ineligible, the following action will take place:

The student will be ineligible to participate in all team-related activities from Monday - Sunday of that week. The student will be re-evaluated the following Monday for the next week’s participation.

Sportsmanship

Participation in sports, and any other activity at Beach Park Middle School, is not only a privilege, but also an extension of the classroom. We want our students to learn how to work as individuals and as a team. We also want students to learn how to be respectful citizens in their community, even when facing challenging circumstances.

It is our job as parents, coaches, athletic directors, and administrative staff to hold our students to a high level of sportsmanship and citizenship. Students and parents agree to this code of conduct by signing up for extra-curricular activities.

To that end, we will be taking strong action for any student who violates the rules of sportsmanship. Any student who receives a technical foul or red card for conduct or sportsmanship issues will be removed from the game/match and serve an additional one (1) game suspension. Any student involved in taunting, or verbally harassing a teammate or opponent, or using profanity on the court/field will be removed from the game and serve an additional one (1) game suspension. If a student is involved in a fight, that student will be removed from the team. When physically confronted by another team’s player, we expect our student to walk away from the confrontation.

Our coaches are expected to model the same sportsmanship characteristics and will be held to the same policy as their team.

We want our students to enjoy the activities in which they participate. However we feel that it is more important that our students learn the value of good sportsmanship and fair-play, even when faced with difficult situations.

Additional Guidelines:

Student-athletes are expected to be leaders – positive examples for their peers – in the classroom. To that end, we hold student athletes to a higher standard as they are representatives for their team, their grade, and their school.

  • Student-athletes who make poor choices and receive a detention may not skip serving that detention due to a practice or a game.

  • If a detention is skipped by a student- athlete, that student will not be able to participate in the next game.

  • In the event that a student-athlete receives an In-School Suspension (ISS/ "Restart"), the student will not be allowed to dress/participate in the next game.

  • In the event that a student-athlete receives an Out-of-School Suspension (OSS), the student may be removed from the team and/or will be ineligible for 5 days for every day of suspension (Ex. a student is suspended for 2 days - they are not eligible to participate in practices or games for 10 days).

Modification of Athletic or Team Uniform

Students may modify their athletic or team uniform for the purpose of modesty in clothing or attire that is in accordance with the requirements of the student’s religion or the student’s cultural values or modesty preferences.
