The Beach Park School District is starting a new program called PBIS. PBIS stands for Positive Behavior Intervention Supports. It is a program that focuses on being positive and rewarding students for appropriate behavior, instead of focusing on negative behavior. PBIS has three major components: systems, data, and practices.

  1. Systems (How things are done) - PBIS is led by a school team, which makes decisions about how to best improve behavior in that school. The team decides which problems to focus on, and plans together how to solve those problems. When solving problems, the team always uses data.
  2. Data (How decisions are made) - Information is collected about student behavior (attendance, referrals, suspensions, tardies, etc), and all decisions are made based on that information. That information is used to determine practices.
  3. Practices (How staff members interact with students) - All behavior expectations are posted throughout the school and taught to students on a regular basis. Staff members praise and reward students when they meet those expectations. Schools plan celebrations to acknowledge all the positive things that are happening in that school.

Beach Park School District's mission will be to support schools in their PBIS programs and facilitate the effective teaching and learning of positive behavioral expectations. PBIS will be moving full speed ahead during the 2011/2012 school year. All of the schools are teaching their students behavioral expectations, and finding fun ways to celebrate when students meet those expectations. We are collecting data about student behavior and using that data to make sure we are teaching students everything they need to know about how to be successful in school.
